The Alhambra , the Andalusian palace-fortress included on the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 1984, along with the Generalife and the historic quarter of the city, the Albayzín. This historical richness, the fruit of the Muslim, Jewish and Christian influence, makes of Granada one of the most important tourist and cultural centres of Spain . Granada is without doubt, the European city with the most impresive vestiges left from the Islamic civilization. The majesty of the Alhambra dominates the city. It is the most visited monument in Spain and one of the most beautiful and admired buildings in the world. The Alhambra was the residence of the Nasrid sultans (13 th -15 th centuries). It was simultaneously a palace, a citadel and a fortress. Within its walls there were living the royal family, domestic servants, civil employees and soldiers. Three areas can be distinguished: the Palace, the Fortress or military zone and the Generalife, (property of the Sultans with open spaces and gardens). There have been set strict limitations to the number of visitors and time frames depending on which part of the complex is visited. We suggest you to fix visits and purchase tickets up in advance, specially in high season. Access to the Nasrid Palace is restricted to 330 people every 30 minutes. The visit only lasts for the agreed period of time (half an hour) printed on your ticket. If you are not right on time, you'll miss the opportunity, and will have to get a new ticket for that zone. However, the entrance to the Fortress and the Generalife doesn't work to a tight schedule. HISTORY: Last Moorish Kiingdom reconquered by the Catholic Kings in 1492. Even today, Granada has a peculiar Arabic atmosphere. Its crafts, gastronomy and architecture are determined by the historical past of the city. The magic comes from the cultural heritage, the magnificent viewpoints and the Cármenes (villas surrounded by gardens) so typical in the city. The Albaizyn is an area situated in the northeast of Granada city, on a sunny hill top. Dating from the 11 th century. It is an Arabic structure full of narrow winding streets arranged in a web system where the visitors find it hard to orient themselves in the area, if it wasn't for the angle of inclination of the hill. Moreover, remnants of the Iberian, Roman and mostly Arabic civilizations are found in this area. The place offers spectacular views of the city, Alhambra , Generalife, Sierra Nevada mountain and the Darro river. The Alhambra , sited high up on a cliff next to the Darro river in Granada city. The citadel called in Arabic “Qalat al-Hamra” , The Red Fortress, from the red colour of the walls covered with mud coat which doesn't remain today. The complex combining the Arabic gardens of the Generalife, Palaces, the Fortres and the Palace of Carlos V. The most celebrated parts are: The Court of the Lions, the Court of the Arrayanes, the Hall of the Ambassadors (the throne room), the Golden Court and the Baths. The complex was founded by the Nasrid prince Muhammad I (1.238-1.278), first sultan of the Nasrid Muslim dynasty. His successors: Muhammad II, Yusuf I and Muhammad V instigated improvements to give its splendor and grandeur throughout centuries XIII and XIV. The Generalife is the summer old palace of the Nasrid sultans in Granada . Its construction was begun in the middle of the 13 th century and was redecorated at the beginning of the 14 th century under the auspices of Abu-I- Salid Ismail. The palace is graced by terraces and is ornamented with marble, ceramics and ataurique. It is surrounded by trickling fountains and peaceful lush gardens full of charm. The Courtyard of the Pond is very popular with its characteristics water channels. This is one of the most serenely sensual and beautiful buildings in the world, a place where Moorish art and architecture reached their pinnacle. A masterpiece for you to admire, and it is in Granada , a city full of culture and history. |
